McNamara-Rosemary Beach-Bridgetown Avenue House-Featured

This was my family’s house. The design shows who we are, color-loving fun people.  The exterior combines simple forms with great spaces for exterior living. Situated on Rosemary’s Parkside, this Gulf Coast community was a great place to raise our kids within the freedom of a new-urban community. I collaborated with Susan Massey of Bohlert-Massey Interiors to get it just right.

McNamara-Saunders Bridge House-Exterior

Saunders Bridge is nestled in the mountains south of Birmingham.  This lake setting house takes its forms from Alabama’s folk vernacular architecture incorporating simple gabled roofs and shed dormers.  I planned this community with the idea that the houses and their materials would blend with the surrounding lake and trees.

Set out on a small peninsula, the house’s terraces take in the lake view.

The villas at Alys Beach are freestanding homes with surrounding yards.  This villa maximizes the abundant outdoor space with three separate landscaped courtyard areas, each with their own fountain. The second floor terrace has spectacular views of the Caliza Pool and Central Park across the street, while a covered loggia below extends the living area to an outdoor space with a wood burning fireplace.

This Rosemary Beach side-yard house fronts the pedestrian boardwalk on the way to the beach. The carriage house encloses a private side-yard terrace where a fountain and pool provide a focal point. Inside, the living area opens to a wrap around porch with views to the Gulf, and a large banquette opens to the kitchen.  A sitting room with a small fireplace provides a cozy place to escape.

Two front porches frame the parapet of the Rosemary Beach Gulfside home, and a small perch on the third floor has spectacular views of the Gulf of Mexico.  The interior features timber trusses and beams that lift the space above the dining area and carry the stairs.  This is a side-yard house suggestive of what you might find in Charleston, South Carolina with a courtyard and outdoor fireplace.

Saunders Bridge is a community built around the centerpiece of a 100-year old historic covered bridge along Lake Lauralee south of Birmingham, Alabama.   In keeping with Alabama’s folk vernacular architecture, I planned this community with the idea that the houses and their materials would blend with the surrounding lake and trees.  The nature-rich environment allows lakeside homes to engage the water and mountainside homes to climb up the mountains which are the foothills of the Appalachians.

The Tabby Lofts is a mixed-use commercial building in Rosemary Beach, with parapets, smooth stucco and shutters typical of a Town Center building.  A bookstore fills the first floor and residential units are on the upper floors.  Balconies and terraces allow views to the Town Square.

The challenge was to fit the main house, carriage house, outdoor living area with fireplace and pool onto this narrow 36 foot lot.   The house took on a more vertical orientation, with a tower element acting like a lantern for a pedestrian boardwalk terminating vista.  The master bedroom bedroom takes up the entire third floor with a sitting area, fireplace and spiral staircase to the tower.

The views of the Gulf of Mexico from the second floor living areas, the third floor master and the porches are what it’s all about in Rosemary Beach.  You just can’t get tired of it!  Because of the small lot size, only a half-carriage house was allowed so getting creative with cantilevered and vertical spaces was necessary.
